Our regional teams have recorded messages to let their communities know that BUSHkids is here for them during the coronavirus crisis.

While our Service Centres are currently operating via phone and teleHealth, be assured we are still here to support children and families in regional, rural and remote areas of Queensland.

Mount Isa DATSIP Family Funday

Sharon along with local volunteers, Paris and Janet Penfold, recently attended the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (DATSIP) Family Funday at Minnie Davis Park, Mount Isa.

They took along with them Who Sank the Boat? books to giveaway along with two children’s activities, one an arts and craft activity where the kids were able to make their own mouse, cow or pig nose and the other a water activity for the kids to make and sail their own boat.

This is such an important event for our community as it set in a park that is accessed by our most vulnerable families,

in Mount Isa we have many indigenous families and this gives us an opportunity to connect and engage with the most vulnerable,

so if they ever need our services in the future they already have an idea of who we are and what we do and how we might be able to assist them or people they know.

DATSIP had a survey/competition going for all families who entered the park; the families had to go and yarn to many services attending and ask us “who we are?” and

“what do we do?” and write this down in a thought bubble on the survey; this opened wonderful opportunities for myself and our volunteers to talk to people about our service.

Today was a great success.

Mount Isa Sensory Garden Official Opening

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow

BUSHkids’ Mount Isa officially opened their Sensory Garden on Wednesday! The Sensory Garden Project started in 2018 when the Mount Isa team discussed ongoing concerns from their families about the busy highway that runs at the front of the Centre building. The official Garden Opening, was organised as an opportunity to bring everyone together who had contributed and invested in making the project happen, and to show our appreciation.

A plaque was made with the inscription “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” along with all of our wonderful supporters names proudly engraved:

Mount Isa City Council – for providing the opportunity to apply for the Community Grant
Caitlynd Gardner – our Rodeo Queen Quest entrant – every cent raised has gone into the garden
Duchess 51 Lodge – a hard working organisation who have generously supported us for many years
Bunnings Mount Isa – for donating health vibrant and child friendly plants, and garden items
Allen & Sons Builders – supported our vision and added ideas to make it even better
Haymans Electrical – supporting us with fundraising at their local charity golf day
Border Ride – annual event donation where the Mount Isa team man a water and rest station
Volunteers – we couldn’t achieve anything without the continued enthusiasm and support

We received wonderful feedback for our Sensory Garden and it simply reminds us that it’s not just gardens that start from planting a seed, we hope that our story is just the beginning for many others.
